What equipment do I need to make candy wrappers?

ANSWER:   You need a computer, a printer, and a program that will allow you to use graphics and text to make your wrappers.   You can also use a laminator and/or clear envelopes to protect your candy after it's made but these are optional.

Do I need special software?

How do I figure out what size a wrapper should be?

ANSWER:  You can get wrapper measurements by simply taking an original wrapper from the candy of your choice and measuring it. You then transfer those measurements to the program you are using.  You can also find templates for various candy wrappers online.

Can I use graphics from the programs I'm using now?

ANSWER:  There is no one answer to this question, but in general you need graphics that are for "commercial use".  That means the creator of the graphics gives you permission to use them on items that you sell.  Most programs such as PrintMaster, PrintArtist, etc…do not allow you to use their graphics commercially, but in order to be sure read the license that comes with the program of your choice.  A few companies that do allow you to use their graphics include BelverBears, Art Explosion and Lisa's Country Clipart.]

Do I need to use a special paper to make wrappers?

ANSWER:  You can use inkjet paper to make wrappers.  It can be purchased at most office supply stores by the ream (500 sheets).

I've heard about the new Hershey candy bars. Does this make it more difficult to wrap the candy?

ANSWER: No, the newly designed packing for Hershey and other candies don't make it more difficult to wrap the candy.   You may need to tape the ends of the original wrapper back before wrapping the candy, but that can be easily done.

If I decide to do this as a business do I need any special licenses or permits?

ANSWER: If you decided to do this as a business you need to register your business with your local government agency.  This can vary from state to state.  You may also need to register to collect state sales tax.

ANSWER: No you don't need a laser printer to make wrappers.  The vast majority of candy wrapper professionals use a color inkjet printer.

Where do I find the candy?

ANSWER: You can buy the candy by the case at places like Costco, BJs, Sams Club, etc..

Do I need anything special to seal the candy wrappers?

ANSWER:  Most people use scotch or double-stick tape to seal their wrappers.

Can I make wrappers using Blues Clues, Disney characters, Dora The Explorer, etc…

ANSWER:  The answer to that is no 99.9 percent of the time. Characters like the examples used in the question are protected by copyrights and you would need special permission to use them legally.  This would most likely require that you pay tens of thousands of dollars (or more) for licensing fees.   The general rule is, "If you see it on TV or in the movies you CAN NOT use them for your wrappers."  The same applies to any graphics.  You must get permission from the person who created the graphics in order to use them on items you sell.
